Kashf, The Lifting of the Veil

Saturday, 6 February

A film about homecoming and belonging, Kashf opens with Armaghan’s return to his native Pakistan after 25 years abroad. He is searching for the Sufi holy man who blessed his mother before he was born, thereby committing her son to the spiritual path. Armaghan’s hometown Lahore is unfamiliar to him now, and its streets are thick with mysteries, both spiritual and material. Meanwhile, his cousin Ali longs to pursue a different path, dreaming of success in Lollywood. Can either of them succeed in reaching their elusive goals?

Growing up in Pakistan, Ayesha Khan noticed the religious drift of the country towards a stricter form of Islam influenced by Wahhabism over the course of her youth. Her first film Kashf explores Pakistan’s relationship with older Islamic traditions in the country such as Sufism. She joins us to talk about, amongst other things, Sufism, filmmaking and working towards a revival of cinema in Pakistan.
