Chuan Lu’s riveting film plays out a conflict which flares up all over the world: a struggle for control of dwindling natural resources, in this case in a remote region, far away from the state’s eye. It is set on the northern edges of the Tibetan plateau, where local vigilantes have taken the law into their own hands to confront poachers who are hunting the local species of antelope towards extinction. A journalist arrives from Beijing to investigate the situation, and follows the “mountain patrol” on their dangerous missions. This is a wild and lawless land, and the film builds an uneasy tension as the mountain patrol plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the poacher bands. The stakes are high, and vastness of the backdrop adds a sense of timelessness to the bitter conflict. Beautifully shot, the film won awards at seven festivals.
