SISTER SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS:
Organised in collaboration with Hackney Learning Trust, Himalaya Festival has set up “day in the life” video exchanges between children from Hackney schools and the Tibetan Children’s Village in the foothills of the Indian Himalaya. The Tibetan Children’s Village is based in Dharamsala. Its mission is to ensure that all the refugee children under its care receive a sound education and firm cultural identity to become self-reliant and contributing members of the Tibetan community and the world at large.

STORYTELLERS WORKSHOP WITH BHAVIT MEHTA
London born Bhavit, a Biology graduate, worked at UCL before starting ‘Saadhak Books’ in 2007, an independent publishing house producing children’s picture books based on South Asian folktales. Bhavit works closely with the book industry group, the ‘Society of Young Publishers’ and is an author and storyteller. His first publication Laghu the Clever Crow launched in July 2009. Bhavit is co-creator of the week-long ‘South Asian Literature Festival’, based in London, starting October 2010.

EARLY YEARS MUSIC WORKSHOP
WITH BALUJI SHRIVASTAV (4-8 years)
Born in Uttar Pradesh and blind from a young age, Baluji Shrivastav is recognised for his great talents as a composer and sitar player. With the Festival, he will be holding music and storytelling workshops across schools in East London.

CHILDREN CINEMA SCREENINGS
An exciting range of films selected from the main Festival programme for teachers and school groups, or individual students of any age. We are working closely with Hackney Learning Trust to bring students from the local community to attend daytime screenings at Rich Mix during festival week.

FILMCLUB
FILMCLUB (the educational arm of LOVEFILM.COM) will be offering a children’s award for the Best Festival Film Review, selected by a jury of young people at Rich Mix. They are also helping to fund screenings for the Children Cinema as well as offering their members discount entry.

KITEMAKING WITH KARL LONGBOTTOM
Karl has been running kite workshops for all ages for over 15 years. He introduces his audience to the history of kites from all around the world, including both kites and pictures. He carefully guides his students through making their first kite from basic materials and gives them an opportunity to fly it.
